Continuous Improvement - Plan, Do, Check, Act
I thought this was an interesting way of structuring what most of us already do when we implement changes to a website, software, code, etc.
The Deming Cycle is a proposal for handling changes. It includes four steps that repeat in a cyclical pattern:
- PLAN
- establish the objectives and processes necessary to deliver results in accordance with the specifications.
- DO
- implement the processes.
- CHECK
- monitor and evaluate the processes and results against objectives and Specifications and report the outcome.
- ACT
- apply actions to the outcome for necessary improvement. This means reviewing all steps (Plan, Do, Check, Act) and modifying the process to improve it before its next implementation.
Repeat…
The step that is most often skipped, in my opinion, is the “Check” Step. After we implement the change, we need to Check the results. How often have you uploaded a file to your web-sever, and thought… “I know it’s going to work, I’m moving on to the next thing…” only to find out later that what should have worked, didn’t…

IE and Standards…. Do You Sense the Irony?
I thought this was intersting. Rachel Andrew wrote a review on Microsoft’s Expression Web, its web editing tool for designers and developers:

Page 3 of the Quick Start Guide opens with the words:
“Standards-based websites”
Expression Web solves a problem facing all web designers today: how to build websites that fully adhere to published standards, including support for XHTML.”
This is just my opinion, but I would appreciate if they created a web-browser that correctly supports standards first…
This is Cool… Automatic Offsite Backup
